Description:
Services provided are: Services to children ages birth to five who are visually impaired. Children are eligible for services if they have a corrected visual acuity of 20/70 or greater in the best corrected eye. They may also qualify if they have normal acuity but have a visual field loss of 20 degrees or less; or an ophthalmologist recommends services. Services we offer include; functional vision assessments, visual efficiency and low vision skills development, pre-Braille and Braille instruction, consultation services to families and providers, family support services, developmental assessments, IFSP development, Orientation and Mobility, Child Service Coordination, Service Coordination, and staff development. Services are provided in natural environments with a strong emphasis on parental involvement.

Services Provides are: Information and Support for Families of children with Special Needs in Alleghany, Ashe, Avery, Mitchell, Watauga, Wilkes, and Yancey counties. Provides information and support for families who have a premature infant, a child with a disability or chronic illness or a family who has experienced the death of their child. Can match a family one-to-one with a trained, volunteer Support Parent who has a child with special needs. These volunteer families provide emotional support and share the expertise of their own experiences. Supports professional working with families caring for children with special needs. Sponsors workshops, trainings and support groups. Promotes collaboration among parents, families and service providers.

Description:
Provides services to parents and their children- infants, toddlers, 2 year olds, 3-year olds, and 4-year olds. The CDC also serves as an observation and internship laboratory for students from the Early Childhood Education Curriculum, Human Services Curriculum, and the Nurse Education Program. The Center's objective is to address holistically each child's needs through developmentally appropriate care practice based upon the Creative Curriculum model. We also maintain a low staff-to-child ratio according to North Carolina's 5 star and National Association for the Education of Young Children requirements.
